Many students in post-secondary and graduate programs may be interested in applying to an Ontario Medical school. The process for some is easy but for others can be daunting. Firstly, where to start? Where can I apply? Where do I want to apply? Can I even get in? The answers to these questions may be easier to find then you may think! I’ll try to answer some of the most common questions for those interested in a profession in medicine below!
Where do I even start?
First: Visit the “Ontario Medical School Application website“.
If you find this site then you’re on the right track. From here you can find all the important information pertaining to your medical school application.
Second: Visit the “Important Dates” section.
This step might just save your life. Remember to read through the “OMSAS-Important Dates” carefully. OMSAS App is all electronic based and will not accept any late submissions!
Once you meticulosity insert these dates into your calendar, it’s time to move onto the more important questions. These concerning your eligibility:
Am I eligible to apply? How do I determine my GPA?
First: Pick the institutions you plan to apply to.
Remember: Just like Laurentian is different to Western in its application process and requirements, so are the medical institutions of ontario. In ontario we have 6 medical school. All being very diverse in location, academic requirements and student suitability. I’ve listed the 6 below. *Click on the medical program for more information*
Second: Determine your GPA and compare it to “OMSAS Undergraduate GPA Conversion Table“
This table will help you convert your individual grades into the OMSAS GPA. Click the link for more detailed instruction through the OMSAS site!
Once you determine your OMSAS GPA you can eliminate some medical institutions you might not qualify for. Do this step as early as possible. If you’re only short a few GPA points and you haven’t graduated, it’s as easy as buckling down, working hard and you can get to where you want to be!
Once you have set up your account, the remainder of your application is really easy. If you give yourself the time! I suggest giving yourself at least a few months to complete the app. It will make for a more complete and polished application!
